Indio gang member arrested after shots fired near police
Officers en route to an armed robbery call in Indio were the targets of a gunman Tuesday night. As it turns out, the robbery was completely unrelated to the shooting, according to the Indio Police Department.
Officers were called to the Circle K on Monroe Street and Oleander Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. They said a Hispanic man, described as 19 to 25-years-old, made off with $30 in cash before they arrived.
Witnesses said the suspect weighed about 130 lbs., was bald and was last seen wearing a blue hooded-sweatshirt, blue jeans and a black hat. It’s unknown if he fled in a vehicle or on foot.
Indio Police Sgt. Dan Marshall said when officers pulled up to the Circle K, a man in a silver Range Rover shot at them before taking off. Fortunately no one was hit or hurt in the shooting.
A short pursuit was initiated, and ended a few minutes later with a traffic collision in La Quinta at Miles Avenue and Monticello.
Marshall said officers arrested the shooting suspect, 35-year-old Mario Gonzalez, who is a documented gang member in Indio. Police found shell casings and the gun.
Miles Avenue was shut down at Jefferson while the investigation was underway.
No word on if anyone was injured in the resulting crash.
