Sentencing will be in May for Joseph Roy Scott II
An Indio man was convicted today of second-degree murder and assault causing the death of his 23-day-old son by striking the infant’s head against a granite counter top and then hitting the baby when he wouldn’t stop crying.
Jurors deliberated about two days before returning their verdict against 26-year-old Joseph Roy Scott II, who is scheduled to be sentenced May 8th.
The abuse happened in June of 2008 and the baby died in July of 2009.
Scott was initially arrested on suspicion of child abuse and posted bail in 2008.
Over the next month, he committed 13 armed robbries at Circle K stores across Riverside County, stretching from Indio to Rubidoux.
He pleaded guilty to the robberies in 2012 and was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
Scott also faces charges in a separate case, alleging that he and three co-defendants ambushed deputies at the Riverside County jail in Blythe during a murder attempt on a sheriff’s sergeant.
He’s scheduled to appear in court Friday for a pretrial hearing in that case.
