Firefighters believe garage fire sparked after mechanical malfunction

The Palm Springs Fire Department was called to a home on Tuesday after a fire was reported in the garage. The home is located on the 2400 block of Araby Drive in Palm Springs.

Firefighters got the call around 2:15 p.m. and found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Officials said they believe the fire started due to a mechanical malfunction with the car.

The owner had just returned home before the fire sparked in the garage.

Firefighters said the garage was destroyed but they were able to save the home. They said the garage was connected to the house by a wooden stairwell which provided them with more time to douse the flames before the fire spread.

Everyone got out of the three-story home in time and they’re all safe, a neighbor told us at the scene.

Fire crews remained on scene until close to 4 p.m.
