West Nile death reported in San Bernardino County
Health officials say a patient being treated for West Nile virus in San Bernardino County has died.
The county’s public health officer, Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare, said Monday that the victim from Ontario was more than 60 years old and died several days ago. No other patient information was released.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper says five cases of the disease have been reported in San Bernardino County this year. Eight were reported last year – with no deaths.
Statewide, 36 cases have been confirmed since Jan. 1. Last year there were 54 confirmed cases in California.
West Nile is transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms range from mild and flu-like to severe neurological issues.
