PSUSD students take on new virtual school
The Palm Springs Unified School District launched a new school this year. The Desert Learning Academy, formerly the Ramon Alternative Center in Palm Springs, is a virtual school focused on providing students K-12 the personalized support they need to succeed.
All course work is online, but students must regularly check-in with their teachers through scheduled in-person meetings or by video or phone. The campus is available for students who need extra help and to use computers.
“When students come in we ask them what they want to do and how do they want to achieve it, and create a plan for them and help them get to their plan,” said principal Tom Reed.
The Desert Learning Academy also gives students flexibility.
“Due to family complications I have to travel a lot because of their work and so this program allows me to complete my tests, stay on task with my homework, speak with my advisors or case managers,” said 12th grader Joel Fuerte.
There are 128 students enrolled so far. A Desert Hot Springs location is also available at the Edward Wenzlaff Education Center.
“What makes us a lot different from some other virtual schools is we have the ability because we have this large campus where students can come on a daily basis for support on any of their content needs. It’s not just a computer talking to you, you have a live person, a live place where you can go and get support,” said Reed.
The school district hopes the program will continue to grow and help prepare students for college.
Desert Learning Academy is currently open enrollment, accepting students from throughout the Coachella Valley who transfer to PSUSD.
