Students complete in annual Math Field Day

Elementary school students from 17 schools were at Indio’s Shadow Hills High School Saturday.

800 students in grades two through five from the Desert Sands Unified School District were taking part in the annual Math Field Day 2017.

The little thinkers competed in a host of math puzzles and games including Danger Zone, Capture, Quick Draw, Hex, and 5 in a Row. The event’s goal is to get them interested in math.

Michael “Mick” Wilhite, DSUSD director of supplemental services said the goal is, “to let them see math is fun, and academics can be fun. It’s not just sitting in a classroom. It’s an actual event, a competition. It’s being part of a team.”

The students also were “orienteering”– which is using compasses and coordinates to navigate the campus.

Others made origami and raced in math relay events where they competed to see who could complete a series of math equations fastest.
