Local leaders to make case for gas tax support
California’s gas tax will be in the spotlight Thursday, as local leaders will be making their case to keep it in place. The focus is on Proposition Six which would repeal the Road Repair and Accountability act, better known as the gas tax.
The Yes on Six campaign held a news conference yesterday calling for an investigation after complaint after a contractor working with Caltrans was allegedly handing out flyers opposing Proposition Six. Caltrans says it’s now looking into the matter, and has contacted its contractors to say it does not condone political advocacy on project sites.
The campaign argues the gas tax spike people’s cost of living and gives a blank check tax hike that won’t necessarily be spent on roads.
The No on Six campaign however argue a gas tax repeal would stop critical transportation projects and jeopardize the safety of bridges and roads.
They also say it would eliminate funding for more than 6,500 transportation improvement projects in the state.
The No on Six supporters will be holding a news conference at Patriot Park in Cathedral City at 11 a.m. Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon and Cathedral City Mayor Stan Henry are expected to speak.
