Fight breaks out at Indio-DHS Freshman football game, Varsity game canceled
The Indio-Desert Hot Springs high school varsity football game has been canceled after a fight broke out during the Freshman game.
One player said a DHS coach assaulted him.
“So I went on the field to pull off my teammate, he swung at my brother soIi hit him and he took off my helmet and starting hitting me, kicked me on the floor,” explained Johnny Vargas, an Indio Freshman football player.
Mary Perry, a spokesperson for Desert Sands Unified School District, said the fight was only among students, coaches stepped in to break up the fight.
Joan Boiko, a spokesperson for Palm Springs Unified School District, also confirmed that the fight was between students, but did add that a coach got hit with a helmet while breaking up the fight.
Desert Hot Springs High School Athletic Director Kai Lyles said the fight started when Indio players started assaulting a downed DHS player. He could not confirm whether any coaches assaulted players, but did say Indio player hit a DHS assistant coach.
Lyles said the school will review viewer video to determine the role of each player during the fight.
The Indio Police Department confirmed nobody was detained following the incident.
UPDATE: At least 20 students to be disciplined for Indio-DHS football game fight
Boiko said the Varsity game was canceled as staff felt it was unsafe due to threats from parents. Tonight was Senior night so the school still held the festivities but no game was played.
