UPDATE CHP: Pedestrian killed on I-10 Saturday morning
A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning on Interstate 10 in Indio.
The California Highway Patrol issued a release Monday morning saying the unidentified person was struck in the freeway’s westbound lanes at approximately 2:45 a.m., just west of Jackson Street.
The release said a motorist in a Honda reported striking a large unknown object within the lanes of traffic. That driver continued to their residence and notified authorities.
The CHP initially reported the freeway closure was due to, “remains of animal across all lanes.”
Monday’s release said further investigation determined the large object was a pedestrian who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Interstate 10 westbound lanes were closed to all traffic at Jackson Street for nearly three hours to allow officers to conduct their investigation.
A Sig Alert was issued and traffic was diverted off at Jackson Street then redirected back onto the freeway at Monroe Street.
The CHP says the collision is under investigation and anyone with any information was encouraged to call the investigating officer, Officer Dyer, at (760) 772-5300.
