DSUSD: School in session today as police investigate nearby shooting

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department was investigating a shooting near the border of Coachella and Indio early Friday morning, but a spokeswoman for the Desert Sands Unified School District said classes at nearby Van Buren Elementary School would be in session and continue normally.
The violence was reported just after midnight along the 47600 block of Van Buren Street along the border of Indio and Coachella.
Riverside County Sheriff's Department's public information officer, Deputy Flores confirmed an adult victim suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital.
There was no immediate word on the injured person's condition, and a suspect remains outstanding.
According to our crew at the scene, staff were being turned away from entering Martin Van Buren Elementary School in the early morning hours, but around 6:30 a.m., staff was allowed back on campus.
A school district spokeswoman, Mary Perry, said students would be welcomed on campus as usual for Friday classes.
Sheriff's deputies were also seen knocking on doors of neighboring homes.
Police shut down Van Buren Street to all traffic between Corregidor and Leyete Avenues during the investigation.
