Indio singer Abi Carter receives coveted platinum ticket after stunning ‘American Idol’ audition

Local singer and musician Abi Carter is heading to Hollywood after an emotional audition left the 'American Idol' judges and crew in awe. The Indio native was the show's final audition of the night on Sunday night's episode, and it ended with awestruck and applause. Carter was awarded one of three Platinum tickets that gives the contestant an automatic trip to Hollywood.

"I have been a fan of 'American Idol' my entire life and so I think I've been telling myself since I was a kid that when I got older I would do it. And this is me just doing it," Carter told the three judges.

During the audition, Carter performed a rendition of Billie Eilish's 'What Was I Made For?" on the piano. The 21-year-old stunned the judges with her immaculate and wistful performance while members of her family waited anxiously outside the audition area.

After the performance, the entire room erupted in a standing ovation. 'American Idol' judge Katy Perry stepped out from behind the desk and walked over to a tearful Carter, praising her for singing from the heart and asking "What were you made for for? You were made for this, 100-percent."

Behind the desk, judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie said to each other that Carter could very well be the "winner of 'American Idol'".

"Luke, she's top ten right," asked Perry while embracing Carter. To which he responded,

"That's what I just said. I've never heard the crew clap."

"It was brilliant," said Richie.

With tears in her eyes, Carter stood there in front of all three judges with a smile on her face.

"I'm speechless, I don't even know what to say right now," said Carter.

Two of her sisters, her brother and her mother came out to support her throughout the audition. They rushed into the room and surrounded the singer, throwing their arms around her and hugging her tight.

"Your life is about to change," said Perry.

The Indio native is the second oldest of seven siblings to a single-mom. Because she was upgraded from a gold ticket to a platinum, she now gets to advance to Hollywood and skip the first round.
