Man killed in Palm Springs shooting identified as Coachella resident
Authorities today publicly identified a man killed in Palm Springs last month.
Jose Sosa, 44, of Coachella was pronounced dead at the scene of the fatal shooting on June 22.
Officers were sent to the 700 block of West Racquet Club Drive at about 4:15 a.m. on a shooting report and found Sosa dead in the street, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.
Coroner's officials reported having difficulty locating Sosa's family members, accounting for the delay in his name being released publicly.
His alleged killer, 42-year-old Jeffrey Burgess of Sky Valley, was charged with murder. He also faces a sentence-enhancing allegation of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury.
Burgess pleaded not guilty and remains held on $1 million bail at the Benoit Detention Center in Indio. He is due in court again Wednesday for a felony settlement conference.
According to police, Burgess called 911 and "reported being involved in a shooting" at the location. He was detained and questioned, and later taken into custody.
No one else was injured, and there was no word on what precipitated the shooting.
Burgess has no documented felony convictions in Riverside County.
