Man who shot at father and 8-year-old son pleads guilty, sentenced to prison
A 21-year-old man who shot at a man and his 8-year-old son in Coachella pleaded guilty to felony charges today and was immediately sentenced to eight years and eight months in state prison.
Feliciano Navarette III of Coachella pleaded guilty Monday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio to one felony count each of assault with a gun, criminal threats to cause death or great bodily injury, possessing controlled substances while armed and shooting at a vehicle, according to court records. He also admitted to a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a firearm.
Deputies responded at 8:08 a.m. Sept. 17, 2022, to the 84100 block of Tera Vista to a report of a shooting, according to Sgt. David Aldrich of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Aldrich said a 30-year-old Coachella father and his young son were in the area when Navarette opened fire on them, striking a vehicle several times. Neither the father nor the child was struck.
Navarette drove away in a white BMW, but was subsequently arrested at about 5 p.m. that day in the 200 block of East Shoreline Drive in Long Beach, according to Aldrich.
Personnel from the sheriff's Thermal station Investigations Bureau then served a search warrant on the vehicle Navarette was driving and recovered the firearm suspected of being used in the shooting.
