CVUSD set to layoff 70 full-time employees

The Coachella Valley Unified School District is moving forward with a resolution to lay off about 70 full-time employees.

The decision was made during the CVUSD board meeting Thursday night.

Most of the layoffs will consist of K-thru-8 credentialed teachers. An additional 40 teachers will be retiring after the end of the current school year, with the total reduction equaling about 120 employees.

"We could have disrupted less educators had we had a more targeted approach. So that is my comment about this. I do understand that it's necessary to have the rifts, the 71 that we are proposing. But the way that we're going to roll this out is what I have an issue with."

The motion passed 4-2.

CVUSD staff received a letter announcing the layoffs, attributing the decision to "declining enrollment" and "working to create fiscal solvency" in the district.
