McCormick’s Fire Ruled ‘Accidental’

PALM SPRINGS – One month after a fire ripped through McCormick’s Palm Springs Exotic Car Auctions on Indian Canyon Drive, fire investigators say it was “most likely accidental.”

Speculation first revolved around the possibility that it was most likely set on purpose. But investigators now say after weeks of review and some new video evidence from security cameras in the area, the fire was not an arson case.

Six cars burned up as did the Palm Springs showroom, forcing the business to move next-door in a vacant part of the building.

The video obtained indicates that an overhead, high temperature security light may have malfunctioned.Investigators say thatcaused flaming plastic to fall to the ground where it ignited a ground cover of decorative plastic tiles.

The small fire burned undetected for approximately 40 minutes, until it eventually spread to the automobiles and the structure. Further lab testing is being conducted to corroborate the involvement of the security light.

Palm Springs fire has closed the case with no further action required.
