NATO Promises Investigation Into Mistaken Airstrike

KABUL, Afghanistan- NATO is promising a full investigation of a joint U.S.-Afghan force airstrike on what turned out to be an Afghan army post.

Four Afghan soldiers died in the strike, which was called after Afghan soldiers opened fire on a group of U.S. Special Forces and Afghan commandos. NATO says the Afghan soldiers believed the unit was a group of Taliban militants.

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry is condemning the attack and says once the investigation is completed it wants to “bring those responsible to justice.”

NATO says it will look into what it called an “unfortunate incident,” adding that it works “extremely hard to coordinate and synchronize” operations.

Saturday’s clash and the string of recent deadly encounters between Americans and Afghans are likely to stoke public anger against foreign forces.
