Man killed in HWY 111 crash was delivery driver for Jimmy John’s

We’re learning more about the 26-year-old man who died in a head-on crash on Highway 111 in Palm Desert Wednesday afternoon. The coroner’s office identified him as Lamar Chambers-Geter of Cathedral City.

On Thursday morning, KESQ and CBS Local 2 confirmed that Chambers-Geter was a delivery driver working for Jimmy John’s, a sandwich shop near Westfield Palm Desert, at the time of the crash.

The collision occurred between Fred Waring Drive and Painters Path at 12:53 p.m. The coroner’s office said Lamar died at the scene about ten minutes after the collision.

The two vehicle crash happened when the black Infiniti Lamar was driving crossed over the median and hit an SUV head-on, according to police. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the two-vehicle crash, including whether speed played a factor.

The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The owner of Jimmy John’s released the following statement to us on Thursday:

We are in shock and extremely saddened to learn of this accident that resulted in the passing of one of our employees. Lamar has been with us since the opening of the store and he was like family to us. He took tremendous pride in his work and always went above and beyond to help my wife and I get this store going.

It will not be the same around here without him, he was truly loved by everyone and we will miss him dearly every single day.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
Sean Weingarten, franchise owner

Authorities shut down streets in the area for the entire afternoon while they investigated and cleared the scene.

KESQ and CBS Local 2 will deliver updates as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
