Sheriff Stan Sniff discusses jail overcrowding
Sheriff Stan Sniff believes the man accused of shooting a deputy should have been behind bars before the incident even happened.
Friday at a press conference, Sheriff Sniff emphasized the importance of completing the new jail under construction in Indio, saying jail capacity hasn’t kept pace with population growth in Riverside County.
“As many of you know we only keep the worst of the worst and release the best of the worse, and over the past few decades of doing that, all the easy choices were used up so we frequently have exactly that issue of playing Solomon or playing with a crystal ball trying to project from the past what someone is going to do.”
The new county jail in Indio is expected to be complete by summer of 2018, and the sheriff expects it’ll be filled to capacity overnight when it opens.
