Here’s how you can help those affected by the Cranston Fire
The Cranston fire continues to rage, engulfing 11,500 acres in flames, and prompting Gov. Jerry Brown to issue a state of emergency for Riverside County. Although you may not be able to be on the front lines battling the blaze yourself, there still are many ways to help those affected by the devastating disaster in the mountains.
The American Red Cross is the officially designated avenue for donation and volunteering, according to U.S. National Forest Service public information officer David Cruz. The American Red Cross is playing a key role in supporting the efforts of the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services with their efforts to aid and shelter those affected by the Cranston Fire.
The FIND Foodbank is providing food and water to evacuated families seeking refuge in Coachella Valley. A $1 donation provides 7 meals. Canned food donations are accepted at FIND food barrels found throughout local grocery stores. Find more information on how to donate here.
Here’s how you can help, according to an American Red Cross Riverside Chapter news release:
“For individuals who want to help with financial donations, please click, text or call to donate to the Red Cross to help people affected by disasters big and small. Every single donation brings hope to those in need. You can help people affected by disasters like the Cranston Fire and countless other crises by visiting redcross.org/donate and making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief. You can also text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small.”
And to volunteer:
Regardless of where disaster strikes, the local Red Cross is already in place, ready to respond immediately. Aid is routed and distributed by local Red Cross volunteers with intimate knowledge of the area and needs. Learn more about becoming a Red Cross volunteer or sign up today at redcross.org/volunteer.
Additionally, the Red Cross provided information if you end up caught in the midst of a wildfire:

If you feel threatened, be sure that you leave with time to spare. Confine all pets to one room so you can quickly and easily take them and go if you need to evacuate.Back your car into the driveway for a safer and more efficient way out. Park in an open space facing the direction of escape. Keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors to prevent outside smoke from getting in.
