Riverside County to have pivotal role in CV Link Project
On Tuesday, Riverside County supervisors authorized the Economic Development Agency to handle all real estate services involving the CV Link, a pedestrian and light conveyance pathway that will ultimately stretch 50 miles through the Coachella Valley.
Under the agreement with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, the EDA’s Real Estate Division will oversee property acquisition agreements and securing permanent easements that may be required for the project.
“CV Link will enhance connectivity between major employment, residential, recreational and institutional centers throughout the Coachella Valley, while facilitating and promoting the use of alternative modes of transportation, including foot traffic, bicycles, low-speed electrical vehicles
and mobility assistance devices,” according to an EDA statement.
The long-term objective is to have a continuous path from the Salton Sea to the upper reaches of Desert Hot Springs, according to CVAG.
County officials said the cities of Coachella and Palm Springs are committed to the plan, while other municipalities have yet to subscribe.
The route will mostly trace the Whitewater River channel, running along Tahquitz Creek and, in some locations, paralleling city streets with a paved pathway that’s 14 to 20 feet wide, according to planners.
“CV Link is the largest, most ambitious project of its kind in the region, the state and the nation,” a CVAG summary states. “This alternative transportation corridor will enable healthier lifestyles, spur economic innovation and make the Coachella Valley a more sustainable and appealing place
to live, work and play. It will bring national recognition to the Coachella Valley as a leader in environmentally friendly transportation.”
Construction of the link’s initial segments got underway earlier this year.
Roughly $76 million has been allocated to CV Link to date, according to CVAG
