Agua Caliente to host 3rd annual Veterans University

The third annual Veterans University will take place on Saturday, March 3rd from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Agua Caliente Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. On Monday, a preview of this year’s event was exhibited at Rep. Raul Ruiz’s office in Palm Desert.

The one-day event touches on broader topics relating to services like health care, disability, mental health, home ownership, and employment for veterans. The event also touches on the health hazards of burn pits, a waste disposal method practiced by the military that is believed to expose servicemen and women to carcinogenic chemicals.

“It gives them the opportunity to meet other veterans who may have the same issues and discuss,” says Richard Bentley, the Chapter 78 commander of the Disabled American Veterans.” It’s a good 5-6 hour day for the veterans and their families to learn whats out there for them. because the problem we have is a lot of them don’t even know whats out there and don’t know how to try to access it.”

Presenters at the event include representatives from the Small Business Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other veteran-serving organizations.

The presenters provide an overview of the services made available to veterans as well as more specific, practical, and detailed information on how to get said benefits.
