Transformer explosion leaves residents without power for hours

Some residents in a Palm Springs neighborhood were without power for several hours after a transformer exploded this morning.

People in the Sagewood Complex said the underground explosion sounded like gunshots around 5:45 am.

Two homes had to be evacuated as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

Those homes were left without power and one tenant we spoke to said not having electricity all day, with the rising temperatures, will be tough to handle.

“It’s going to be tough being that the temperatures are going to be in the 100s,” said Lynn Fisher, a resident of the complex. “I may go to a friends house because I have animals and it’s going to get hot.”

Fortunately, the fire was contained underground and did not reach any of the homes. Southern California Edison crews worked for hours to fix the issues.
