Transient Arrested After Deadly Stabbing Near UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE – A 40-year-old transient was arrested on suspicion of stabbing and killing a man near the UC Riverside campus today, police said.

Richard Lockhart, 40, was arrested on suspicion of murder after witnesses said he stabbed a man shortly before 1:15 a.m. today on the 3900 block of Iowa Avenue in Riverside, according to Riverside police Sgt. Mark Rossi.

Police arrived to find the victim, a 54-year-old Riverside resident, suffering from serious stab wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Rossi said, and his identity has not yet been released.

Police found and detained Lockhart less than two blocks away, at University Avenue and Cranford Avenue, Rossi said. Lockhart was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to Robert Presley Detention Center.
